Take your AI interview

We use an AI interviewer to do the initial screening for every role. The interview is a video call that takes about 15 minutes. You can start it as soon as you finish your application, or come back later when it's a better time.

Before you begin

You'll get the best results if you set yourself up properly before starting.

Equipment

  • A modern desktop browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari, current versions). The interview is built for desktop — using a phone or tablet is not recommended.
  • A working camera and microphone. The interview platform will prompt you to grant browser permission to use both when you start.
  • A stable internet connection.

Environment

  • Find a quiet space. Background noise makes it harder for the AI to understand you.
  • Use headphones if you can. They reduce echo and stop your speakers from feeding into your microphone.
  • Close other apps that use your camera or microphone, like Zoom or Slack huddles.

Privacy and integrity

Interviews are recorded and stored in line with our privacy policy. Every interview is reviewed using a combination of automated checks and manual review — both to grade your answers and to detect attempts to cheat with external sources or AI tools.

Important: Do not use Google, ChatGPT, notes, or any other external source while answering questions. Doing so will be detected and will disqualify your application.

Language

All interviews are conducted in English, including interviews for roles in other languages. If you're applying for a non-English role (for example, a French Trust & Safety Data Trainer), the interviewer may ask you questions about that language — grammar, linguistic concepts, terminology — but you should answer in English.

We're working on adding fully multilingual interviews in the future.

How to start an interview

You start interviews from your SME Careers dashboard.

  1. Go to sme.careers/dashboard.
  2. Browse the list of open roles. Click any role title to read more about it.
  3. On the role you want to interview for, click Start.

You'll be redirected to the interview platform in a new tab.

Tip: If you entered a Job ID on your application, you'll also see a Start Interview banner at the top of your dashboard as a shortcut to that specific role.

What to expect during the interview

When the interview platform loads, you'll be asked to grant camera and microphone permissions in your browser. After that, the interview begins automatically.

The interview opens with one background question to warm up, then moves on to questions tailored to the skills the role requires. The AI waits about five to six seconds after you stop speaking before responding — this is intentional, so it doesn't cut you off mid-thought.

If you don't know the answer to a specific question, say so. The interviewer will move on to another topic. We know that many domains are broad and your expertise may sit in a particular subdomain — admitting you don't know something is much better than guessing.

After the interview

You'll receive an email confirmation as soon as your interview is submitted. You can also track the status of every role you've interviewed for on your applications page at sme.careers/applications.

When your result is ready, we'll email you and update the status on the same page.

Interview statuses

  • Under Review — Your interview is being graded. Results typically arrive within 1–2 business days.
  • Incomplete — Either there was a technical problem, or the interview was interrupted before you completed at least three questions. Incomplete interviews don't count toward your retake limit. We'll email you with instructions to retake.
  • Passed — You've cleared the interview stage. If your role also requires an exam, that will be indicated here. Note that passing the interview does not automatically lead to onboarding — see What happens after you pass below.
  • Not Selected — You did not pass this attempt. You can retake the interview if you have attempts remaining, or apply to a different role.

What happens after you pass

Passing the interview moves you to a manual review stage where our team checks your resume and profile to confirm you're a good fit for the network. If you're selected for onboarding, we'll notify you both in the platform and by email.

Heads up: Passing the interview, and even being added to the network, does not guarantee a project match. Some projects have specific country, education, or experience requirements; others may already be fully staffed by the time you finish onboarding. If we don't have an immediate match, you'll stay in our network and we'll reach out as soon as a suitable project becomes available.

Retake policy

You can attempt each role's interview up to three times.

What counts as an attempt:

  • Interviews with a status of Under Review, Passed, or Not Selected count toward your three attempts for that role.
  • Interviews marked Incomplete do not count. An interview is marked Incomplete if you didn't complete at least three questions, or if there was a technical issue during the session.

Cooldown: There is no required waiting period between attempts. However, please wait for the result of your current attempt before starting another — taking the same interview again before you've heard back can lead to confusing or duplicate records.

How to retake

  1. Go to sme.careers/dashboard or your applications page at sme.careers/applications.
  2. Find the role you want to retake.
  3. Click into the role to open its details page.
  4. Click Start the interview for this role. The interview will open in a new tab.
